Elkton, Virginia.

Present Day.

Penfield sat in the emergency waiting room for three hours before Drennan walked out with her injured arm in a sling. She took several slow steps before seeing him near the door. He stood as she approached him.

“When did you get here?” she asked.

“I came after the medical team took the stranger’s body away. Do you have someone coming for you?”

“An officer should be here any second.”

“Good.”

They walked toward the exit and the double doors automatically slid open. The sky was dark at this point and Drennan used her one good arm to pull her jacket tighter. Penfield noticed her wince in the process.

“Did they give you something for the pain?” Penfield asked.

“Yes, but I think it’s starting to wear off already.”

“I’m sorry for what happened to you.”

“How is it your fault?”

“It’s connected to the case I’ve been working. I don’t know how yet, but it is.”

“The woman he was asking about, do you know who she is?” Drennan asked.

Penfield took his knit cap off so she could see the bandage on the side of his head. He’d been wearing it while chopping the wood in his backyard.

“It might have been the woman who did this to me or it could have been the woman who she, and the man she was with, were looking for in New York,” he said.

“Do you know what happened to either of them?”

“Nothing certain.”

Before Penfield could tell her more about the night in the warehouse, Drennan looked past him.

“There’s the officer now,” she said.

Penfield walked with her over to the curb as the white SUV stopped a few feet from them. Drennan opened the passenger door but turned back to Penfield before climbing into the vehicle.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. I’m sorry you got caught up in this, whatever this is.”

“Can you come to the station tomorrow? I’m sure I’ll have more questions by then.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” he said.

She climbed into the SUV and Penfield shut the door behind her.

He stood on the curb and watched as the vehicle left the parking lot and disappeared around the bend in the road.
